Briefing Notes Drinking Water Quality Requirements for PR04
The previous Periodic Review (PR99), covering the period 2000 –2005, included the majority of work needed to meet the requirements of the 1998 EU Drinking Water Directive (98/83/EC), anticipating the requirements of new and revised Regulations to implement the Directive. It also included any outstanding work to meet the requirements of the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 1989. Therefore, much of the larger, significant schemes will have been completed by the start of this next period (PR04: 2005-2010). However, there is still work to be done, not least on maintaining equipment and processes installed over recent years.
The purpose of the briefing notes on the following pages is to provide information about drinking water quality standards, their derivation and implications for PR04.
The standards to be met are those set out in the 2000 (for England) and 2001 (for Wales) Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations. These Regulations set out requirements for over 50 individual parameters.
Water Companies are required to make proposals to DWI for schemes to secure and maintain compliance where contraventions of standards occur or may occur in the future. DWI provides guidance to Water Companies on these matters in Information Letters.
The main issues relating to the key drinking water drivers that may require programmes of works are:
For each issue you will find information on:
- Background - details of the issues, action to date, regions affected etc.
- Statutory obligations - what the standard is, how it is derived
- Issues for the Water Companies – some examples of proposed solutions and their implications
