What's New?

On this page we will be featuring a scheme from one part of the country which encourages people to drink more tap water. The first scheme is Yorkshire Water's 'Tap Idols'

Like all water companies, Yorkshire Water want their customers to drink as much tap water as possible. As you know we should all have plenty of drinks every day and water is one of the best, but some people do not think that tap water is trendy - they prefer to spend their money on bottled water or pop.

Everyone has seen or heard of 'Pop Idol', but what about 'Tap Idols'?

Yorkshire Water came up with an idea that they felt would appeal to people who prefer to have their drinks out of a bottle. They decided to recruit four 'Tap Idols' as part of their 'Fill and Carry' campaign which encourages people to fill plastic bottles and take tap water with them.

The Water Company held 'Pop Idol'-style auditions where the young people had just two minutes to impress the judges with their personality, enthusiasm and ability to get the 'drink tap water' message across. Just imagine how difficult it must have been - just like performing in front of the judges on Pop Idol'!

The auditions featured on Yorkshire Television's 'Calendar' news programme and the final four, two boys and two girls, were chosen to go out and about in the region and promote the scheme. The Tap Idols handed out 30,000 special re-usable bottles in twelve towns and cities across the region.

Tap Idols Winners

The Tap Idols

  • Do you think 'Tap Idols' is a good idea?
  • Would you be more likely to drink tap water if you had met these four while you were out in town with friends or family?
  • What would you do to get more people to drink tap water?
  • Ask your teacher if you could act out your own auditions using volunteer Tap Idol contestants - there is usually someone who wants to be a star!
