IWA UK Committee July 2004 Newsletter |
The IWA UK Committee meets three times a year, usually in January, May and September. See the IWA HQ website for details of all National Committees and the UK Committee. This Newsletter summarises our latest news and future events.
Young Researchers Conference 2004. The 5th annual conference took place on Wednesday 19th & Thursday 20th May 2004 at the University of Southampton. The theme was‘The role of research in exploring global water, waste management and sustainability issues’. 30 researchers from 13 universities gave oral and poster presentations, meeting and exchange ideas with others working on water issues. They were sponsored by the UK Committee, the Research Councils, Severn Trent Water, Thames Water, SEPA, EA and the Universities of Southampton and Loughborough. The best paper receives the Water Engineering Award of the Worshipful Company of Engineers. This year the winner was Guy Ohandja of Imperial College for his paper on ‘The use of a membrane aerated biofilm reactor for treatment of perchloroethylene in wastewaters’. Young Researchers interested in next years conference should contact Professor Andrew Wheatley (a.d.wheatley@lboro.ac.uk) to ensure their name is on the circulation list for advance notification.
Our Individual Members’ Meeting for 2005 will be combined with an international conference addressing “Regulation for Environmental Protection”. We gather on the afternoon of 27 January for a visit to the Cardiff Bay Barrage and short presentations on the environmental aspects by the Cardiff Harbour Authority and the local Environment Agency. Following our annual dinner that evening, on 28 January we have the one-day conference at the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff. This is organized jointly with the IWA Regulatory Interest Group and supported by Amersham International and IWO. Speakers from the UK, Australia, South Africa, Europe and the USA will talk about the balance of regulation and practice to achieve effective environmental protection. World Water Monitoring Day is an opportunity for IWA members in the UK to promote environmental stewardship and protection of the UK's water sources. On October 18th, you are invited to test the quality of local water sources and submit the data to a large international database. Over 75,000 people participated in World Water Monitoring Day last year. It's easy to take part.
