Drinking Water 2000

A report by the Chief Inspector
Drinking Water Inspectorate

STAFFING

  1. The Inspectorate has a complement of 36 posts of which 20 are for professionally qualified staff, 12 for administrative support staff and four for technical support in information handling systems, although some posts have not yet been filled. A list of Inspectorate staff is given below.

  2. From 1 January 1998 the Inspectorate has operated with a team of Inspectors devoted solely to the investigation of water quality incidents and complaints from the public, and a team of Inspectors carrying out technical audit of all companies, administering the regulatory administrative procedures including enforcement action and acceptance of undertakings, and producing the Chief Inspector's Annual Report. To provide companies and DWI with a focal point, an Inspector has been designated for each Company as its Liaison Inspector. In February 2001, the Inspectorate underwent a minor staff restructure that formed a team of Inspectors who are now dedicated to the enforcement of the new Cryptosporidium Regulations.

Use of consultants

  1. The Inspectorate has continued to make use of consultants in support of the technical audit process and the outcome of their work is summarised in the reports on individual companies given in Part 2 of this report.

  2. The Inspectorate is very grateful to all its appointed consultants for their efforts and achievements.
