DWI Information Letter 13/2005

7 September 2005

To: Board Level and Day to Day Contacts of Water and Sewerage Companies and Water Companies in England and Wales

Dear Sir or Madam

FURTHER UPDATE ON THE RESTRUCTURING OF THE DRINKING WATER INSPECTORATE

  1. The purpose of this letter is to provide a further update to the water industry on the organisational changes that are taking place within DWI.

  2. On the operations side, we have had a successful round of recruitment for the three new Inspectors. Offers have been made, but we are not yet in a position to announce the names of the successful candidates. John Gray will provide this information in the near future. We have also appointed three Water Quality Data Officers, who will report to Andy Taylor. These new members of staff will take up their positions over the next few weeks.

  3. Suzanne Calmels has been appointed as Business Administrator in the Business Performance Management Unit. An important aspect of Suzanne’s role will be to provide Personal Assistant services to the DWI Senior Management Team. This means that she should be the first point of contact for Board Level contacts and other key stakeholders who wish to arrange meetings and events involving the Senior Management Team. We are confident that Suzanne’s role will build on, and facilitate the success of, the strategic interface for communications between the industry and DWI, a process that started earlier this year in association with Water UK.

  4. Under the new structure the Water Quality Data Management Unit and the Business Performance Management Unit act as service providers to the rest of DWI. Andy Taylor will shortly be informing companies about new arrangements for submitting all water quality data and Progress Reports to his unit, rather than to named individuals.

  5. On a personal front, this will be my last Information Letter to the industry. With the restructuring almost complete, I feel that I am leaving DWI in safe hands and well equipped to take on the challenges of the future.

  6. Copies of this letter are being sent to Pamela Taylor, Chief Executive, Water UK; Richard Wood, Water Supply and Regulation Division, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs; June Milligan, Environment Division, Welsh Assembly Government; Tim Hooton, Drinking Water Quality Regulator for Scotland; Randal Scott, Drinking Water Inspectorate for Northern Ireland; Chairs of the Regional WaterVoice Committees; Rowena Tye and Tony Smith, Office of Water Services; Tony Warn, Environment Agency; Nigel Harrison, Food Standards Agency; and Gary Coleman at the Health Protection Agency.

  7. This letter is being sent electronically to Board Level and day to day contacts. Please acknowledge receipt by email to dwi.informationletters@defra.gsi.gov.uk. Hard copies are not being sent but the letter may be freely copied. Any enquiries about the letter should be addressed directly to Professor Jeni Colbourne.

Yours sincerely
